Bifold, Patio & French Doors in Nottingham
The three main kinds of garden door behave very differently once open. If you're weighing up bifold, patio and French doors in Nottingham, tell us roughly how wide the opening is and what's in it now. We'll pass the enquiry to an independent local installer, who will survey it and quote you direct.

What This Page Covers
- Bifold doors, with panels that fold and stack to one or both sides.
- Sliding patio doors, with large panes that slide past each other.
- French doors, a hinged pair, with or without fixed side panels.
- Replacements in the same opening, or a larger set in a widened one.
Which Door Suits Which Opening
Bifold doors. The panels fold back like a concertina, so nearly the whole width opens. That suits a wide opening onto a patio. The folded stack needs somewhere to sit, and when shut you see more frames than on a slider. Most sets include a traffic door, a single leaf for everyday use.
Sliding patio doors. Large panes run on a track, so nothing swings into the room. On a two-pane set about half the width opens, but you keep more glass in view, which suits a room where furniture sits close to the glass.
French doors. A hinged pair, usually opening outwards, suited to a narrower opening, often where a back window used to be. Both leaves open fully but need space to swing.
Aluminium or uPVC Frames
Aluminium is stiff enough to hold big panes in slim frames, which is why most bifolds and larger sliders use it. Ask for a thermally broken frame, with an insulating strip between the inner and outer metal. The same frame systems are often used for aluminium windows, so the back of the house can match.
uPVC frames are chunkier and usually cost less. They suit French doors and smaller sliders. On a bifold, some systems limit how wide each panel can be, so ask what width each leaf will be.
Thresholds and Drainage
A standard threshold has a small upstand that helps keep rain out. A low or flush threshold lets the floor run level out to the patio, which helps with pushchairs and wheelchairs. It relies on the patio falling away from the doors, and often on a drainage channel along the outside edge. Ask each installer where the water will go and whether any levels need changing.
Safety Glazing and Energy Ratings
Nearly every pane in these doors falls under the safety-glazing rules in Approved Document K. Glass in doors and side panels from floor level up to 1,500 mm, and in any side panel within 300 mm of a door, has to break safely or resist impact.
Replacing a whole door is building-regulations work. Most bifold, sliding and French doors are more than 60% glazed, and for those the thermal minimum is a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or a Doorset Energy Rating of band C. Ask for the figure on the quote, and which of the six government-authorised schemes will register the job. See building regulations.
Widening an opening is a bigger job. It needs new support above the opening, and structural work like that usually needs its own building control approval. This is general information, not advice on your home.
Bifold, Patio & French Doors in Nottingham Homes
A narrow yard behind a terraced house tends to suit French doors or a two-pane slider, while a wider plot behind a semi leaves room for a bifold stack. Flats and maisonettes have no householder permitted-development rights, which affects the many flats in the Lace Market and the city centre. Nottingham City also has 33 conservation areas; our planning permission guide explains what to check.
What Changes the Price
Width and panel count. Each extra bifold leaf adds frame, hardware and running gear.
Frame material and colour. Aluminium and uPVC sit at different levels; dual colours add to either.
Glass and threshold. Larger or triple-glazed panes, and a flush threshold with outside drainage.
The opening. Widening it brings structural work and making good inside and out.

How It Works
Send us the rough width of the opening and your postcode. We pass it to an independent local installer, who looks at the opening and quotes you direct. We don't make, supply or fit doors, and we don't inspect, approve or check the installer; how to choose an installer sets out what to check before you sign. It's free, with no obligation. Enquiries outside working hours get a call back the next working day.

Common Questions
Are bifold doors better than sliding patio doors?
Neither wins everywhere. Bifold doors open almost the full width but show more frames when shut; sliding patio doors keep more glass in view, but only part of the width opens.
Do I need planning permission for bifold doors?
On a house, new doors that look similar to what's there usually need no planning permission. Turning a window into a door, or changing doors on a flat, a listed building or a house in a conservation area, can change that, so check with the council.
Can patio doors have a level threshold?
Yes, many systems offer a low or flush threshold. It works best where the patio falls away from the doors and rain has somewhere to drain, so ask how that will be handled on your Nottingham home.
